Jury

The international jury consists of eleven major figures in the field of visual communication design and from various countries of the world. A parallel panel of judges, equally authoritative, will evaluate the works of Researchers Category.
A scientific committee will award the Lifetime Achievement Award, which may also be a memorial one.

 

Jury decisions taken by the majority of members are unquestionable and will be reported in a record filed with Aiap and put online on the AWDA website.

    John L. Walters is editor and co-owner of both Eye magazine and Pulp for the Italian paper company Fedrigoni. He founded the group Landscape (landscape.band) and worked as a composer/record producer before launching the music magazine Unknown Public with Laurence Aston. For five years he has been a columnist for the music section of The Guardian. Walters is the author of Alan Kitching: A Life in Letterpress (2016) and he has won three ‘Editor of the Year’ BSME (British Society of Magazine Editors) awards. He has been an editor for Eye since 1999.

    Cinzia Ferrara, architect and graphic designer, is associate professor at Department of Architecture in the University of Palermo, where she is researcher in the field of visual communication. Actually is Delegate for the Visual Communication of the Department of Architecture. She is Past President of AIAP. Besides her design work, she writes on visual communication, teaches and holds lectures at international conferences and several Italian universities and design schools.
    She has written numerous essays and articles published in national and international magazines. She is the supervisor as well as organizer of conferences, exhibitions and workshops. She is also a member of editorial committees, observatories and European projects. She lives and works in Sicily.

Jonas is also a junior researcher at Kaunas University of Technology, where he has specialized in the study of platforms for circular design, and an associate professor at Vilnius Academy of Arts, teaching Brand Positioning. His public roles include Secretary General of the International Council of Design and board memberships in the Lithuanian Design Association and Lithuanian Design Council.

    Amanda Schutz is founder and Creative Director of Curio Studio since 2003. After her graduation from MacEwan University (where she became a licensed Design Instructor), Amanda founded Curio from her downtown apartment with no initial budget and no clients. Twenty years and over 600 clients later, Amanda’s adventurous talent, inexhaustible work ethic, and insatiable auto-didactism has sustained an illustrator-led design boutique renowned for dependability and high quality of output. Outside of Curio, Amanda is a fine artist, a professional illustrator, and founder of the non-profit Canadian Women in Design. In 2022, Amanda was named a Fellow of the Design Professionals of Canada; only 72 other individuals have been bestowed this distinction since 1960. Amanda is a proud mother of her son, Jacob and of roughly three thousand tomato plants.

    Marta Bernstein is a designer, researcher and teacher, currently Creative Director at Studio Matthews (Seattle USA). She has a soft spot for 19th-century type, a topic she has been researching and presented at Typographics, Letterform Archive and ATypI.     Dario Carta (1977) is a graphic designer and historian. After pursuing humanistic studies (a Master’s Degree in Contemporary History and a PhD in Cultural Anthropology), he founded the independent studio #cartadesign, which works with historical institutes, cultural foundations and public administrations. The Studio focuses on cultural projects, among which the design of visual systems for historical, documentary and art exhibitions. At the same time, the Studio specializes in editorial projects. For some years, the Studio has been working on visual and non-visual projects related to contemporary topics: gender, lgbtqia +, human rights, migration, identities, and conflicts. Alongside these activities, Dario Carta conducts research into the history of visual communication, with particular attention to propaganda and political communication, editing publications. He has been general secretary of AIAP, Italian Association of Visual Communication Design since 2019, and he is professor of graphic design and history of visual communication in several advanced schools in Milan.
