What to submit

Following registration, participants are required to submit some materials by uploading them in the dedicated area of the AWDA website (www.aiap-awda.com) following the indications and within the set deadlines. For each project submitted, designers must clearly state the category (even in the file name) in which they wish to participate.

The uploaded materials can be complemented or replaced by others until the closing date of the call.

A pdf file with English text and images must be submitted for each submitted project, which must have the following characteristics:
— A3 landscape format;
— maximum 10 pages;
— weight less than 8 MB;
— to contain images of the finished project;
— to contain a clear description of the project (the concept, process, development, working team) in English (max 10,000 characters);
— to contain (on the last page) the following info about the applicant: first name, last name, country of origin, year of birth, bio in English max 1000 characters, contact information (email, phone, website);
— to contain a colophon with all essential features of the project (fill in the different entries according to the category, see example in the call file).

Freelancers and designers employed in design firms/agencies must also submit a self-declaration, stamped and signed by the studio or firm, certifying the intellectual property of the design submitted. In addition to the project images paginated in the pdf, 3 to 5 photographs in high quality (jpg, 300 dpi resolution) should be submitted.

Exclusion

A design will be excluded from participation in the contest:

a) if it is uploaded after 24:00 (midnight) on the deadline set in the call;
b) if it does not meet the requirements of the call.

Protection

Aiap is responsible for the safety of all the projects and works received and for the confidentiality of the information. To this purpose, Aiap guarantees that the upload area is private and only accessible to jury members.

Jury

Online nominations and submissions will be available to the jury, which will identify the selected projects and then from them: the AWDA 2023 Award, the AWDA for RIGHTS! Award, the three honorable mentions, possible special mentions, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award given by a scientific committee to an influential figure out of the competition.

The jury's decision is final and indisputable. All of the jury's decisions will be made by the majority. The jury will account for its decisions and write a general report on the contest, indicating, in particular, the reasons behind any award given. A copy of the report will be stored by the Aiap secretariat and posted online on the dedicated website of the award (www.aiap-awda.com).

The category ‘researchers’ will be judged by a special jury, made up mainly of professors and university researchers. The composition of the two juries, the international jury and the jury for the research category, will be announced by April 2023.

Use of the materials submitted

All the materials submitted are meant to be available for publication. Aiap may use them, entirely or in part, during the selection process, and reproduce them, entirely or in part, in publications by Aiap Edizioni, on Aiap's websites and related online tools, in press releases concerning the events related to the publication of books and to any exhibitions related to the AWDA award, always indicating the credits (project’s name, designer’s name, client and year).

The designers submitting their works agree that all the materials (texts and images) may be freely adjusted according to the communication needs of the various tools used, relieving Aiap from any responsibility concerning the violation of third parties’ rights.

01. Professionals Category

A maximum of one project (including self-production); a short biography; a photo of the designer and all useful contact details (website, email address, phone number) as well as the completed questionnaire. 

The project must be illustrated in a single pdf document, A3 format, for a maximum of 10 pages including the biography (the pdf must not be heavier than 8 Mb). 

Projects’ specifications and credits
Each project must include full credits as follows: designer’s name and surname, project title, client; year and place of production; collaborations; suppliers; produced artefacts; project description.   

The projects submitted must have been realised from 2015 onwards. All texts must be in English. Italian designers only are required to include texts in English and Italian.

02. PhDs, Research and Training Category

A maximum of one documented research project: a short biography, a photo of the designer and all useful contact details (website, email address, phone no.) as well as the completed questionnaire. 

The project must be illustrated in a single pdf document, A3 format, for a maximum of 10 pages (the pdf must not be heavier than 8 Mb). 

Projects’ specifications and credits
Each project must

report full credits as follows: designer’s name and surname, title of the research project, institution; year and country of production; collaborations; publisher (if published); produced artefacts; project description. 

The research projects submitted must have been realised from 2015 onwards. All the texts must be in English. Italian designers only are required to include texts in English and Italian.

03. Students Category

A maximum of one study project (e.g. degree thesis, exams, workshops results);  a short biography, photo of the designer and all useful contact details (website, email address, phone no.) as well as the completed questionnaire. 

The project must be illustrated in a single pdf document, A3 or other format, for a maximum of 10 pages (the pdf must not be heavier than 8 Mb).

Projects’ specifications and credits
The designer’s name and surname, title of the project or thesis, university or institution of affiliation, name of the tutor (and co-tutor if relevant), place, year; name of the workshop leader designer in the case of participation in workshops, setting/event in whose framework the workshop took place, place, year. The projects submitted must have been realised from 2015 onwards. All the texts must be in English. Italian designers only are required to include texts in English and Italian.
