Jury

The international jury consists of six major figures in the field of visual communication design and from various countries of the world. A parallel panel of judges, equally authoritative, will evaluate the works of Phd, Researchers and Theachers Category.

 

Jury decisions taken by the majority of members are unquestionable and will be reported in a record filed with Aiap and put online on the AWDA website.

    Design critic

    Alice Rawsthorn is an award-winning design critic and the author of Design as an Attitude and Hello World: Where Design Meets Life. Her weekly design column for The New York Times was syndicated worldwide for over a decade. Alice chairs the boards of trustees of The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery in Yorkshire and Chisenhale Gallery in London. A founding member of the Writers for Liberty campaign for human rights, she was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to design and the arts.

    Justus, partner at Pentagram Berlin and Graphic Designer, born in Tokyo and raised in Japan, France and Greece, studied visual communication in Munich. He began his career in 1985 as designer with Rolf Müller. In 1988 he graduated with a Master‘s Degree from Central School of Art and Design in London. In 1989 he joined Pentagram and in 1995 became partner in the firm. Justus has designed logos and brand identities for the German Museum für Kommunikation, Deutsche Kinemathek, the World Economic Forum, Trussardi, Sardegna Turismo, Tiscali, JLL and for the world’s largest airline network Star Alliance.
    Oehler is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).

    Nilam has more than 25 years of experience in branding and advertising, and she has worked in several major advertising companies such as JWT, Landor Associates SEA and Interbrand SEA. Handling major clients like Adaro Energy, Angkasa Pura II, BRM, Bank Mega, Bhinneka Life Insurance, Bumi Resources, Bank International Indonesia, Campina, Cendana, Chandra Asri Petrochenical, Combiphar, CT Corpora, Darya Varia Laboratoria, Ericsson Indonesia, Freeport, Garuda Indonesia, Hokben, Holland Bakery, Multi Bintang, Rekso Group, Siam Cement Group (SCG), Semen Indonesia, Trans Hotel, Trans Studio, Traveloka, Trimegah Securities and TPS Foods.
    Nilam graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, USA with a Bachelor of Fine Art.
    She is also an honorary member of ADGI, Association of Design Graphic Indonesia and member of panel for Asian Games 2018 for Visual Communication project.

    A design leader at Making Waves, Oslo, Norway, currently working on the development of Oslo’s sustainable public transport, Maria has over 23 years of design experience including a broad practice of creating visual identities, exhibitions, signage systems, packaging and magazines. In 2002 she co-funded and was the creative director of the award-winning and internationally renown design agency Commando Group. Educated as a graphic designer in the Netherlands, Maria has been a member of numerous jurys, gives frequent lectures on design and is a member of the Grafill Fund Board.

    (born Perugia, Italy, 1964) is a communication designer and Design Professor. Graduated from ISIA, the High Institute for Graphic Arts in Urbino, he is the founding owner of renowned Bcpt Associati / Comodo studio in Italy. His work ranges from the design of brand identity for private and public companies to strategic design consultancy and communication for cultural events, publishing design, exhibition display and retail identity.
    His specific field of research concerns communication projects for the identity and promotion of territories and communities.

    He has developed a considerable international experience with his studio and his collaborators’ team which, together with the projects carried out throughout Italy, has led him over the years to develop projects in Europe, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Jordan and China.

    He is currently President of Aiap, Italian association of visual communication design. Since 2006 he is Design Methodology professor at Isia Urbino (High Institute for Graphic Arts). Since 2014 he is Design professor at Fine Arts Academy in Perugia and since the last year, Interior Design Professor at Design Department of the Engineering faculty of University of Studies in Perugia.

    Laura is a designer with many years experience in Visual Communication Design. She studied at the ISIA (Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche) in Florence and went on to win a scholarship in 1992. This allowed her to finish her studies at the MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) when she also gained professional experience at the Design Group Studio, working on coordinated image for cultural events. On her return to Italy, she opened a studio under her own name, designing visual identities for private companies and public institutions.

    Since 2004 she has also been teaching Communication Design. She has taught at both the Accademia Italiana and Polimoda and in 2009 she began teaching at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Florence.

    She also holds Graphic Design workshops experimenting with techniques and materials in the field of manual printing. She is the creator and Co-Curator of the Aiap Women in Design Award (AWDA) and also Co-Curator and the Graphic Designer of the cultural project "design_pinetum", dedicated to the discovery and promotion of young talent in product design.

    Raimonda Riccini is Full professor, teaches Theory and history of design and is coordinator of the Ph.D. program in Design Sciences and Deputy Director at the School of Doctorate Studies. Engaged in theoretical and historical research, she founded the journal "AIS/ Design. History and research” (www.aisdesign.org). She did research on the history of women and curated the national conference of Associazione italiana storici del design-AIS/Design Angelica e Bradamante.The women of design (Il Poligrafo, Padova 2017).

    Melania Gazzotti is an art historian, with a particular interest in graphic design and illustration. From 2004 to 2010 she worked for the Mart Museum in Rovereto. In 2013 she was awarded by the Guggenheim Foundation a fellowship that gave her the opportunity of working for the Guggenheim Museums in New York, Bilbao and Venice. In 2015 she worked for Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA), New York and in 2016 she was awarded by Yale University a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowships. She is currently collaborating with the Italian Cultural Institute, New York.

    In 2010 together with Margherita Micheli, he found Mister Gatto, atelier specialising in design research and consultancy for communication systems.
    Since September 2013 Gianluca works as a researcher and aggregate professor in graphic design at the Faculty of Design and Art - Free University of Bolzano/Bozen. At the same time, he is also completing a Ph.D. in typography and graphic communication at the University of Reading. In 2018, he was nominated co-editor of Progetto grafico, international graphic design magazine.

    Francesco E. Guida (*1971) author and assistant professor at Politecnico di Milano (Department of Design, School of Design, Bachelor in Communication Design), has a 25 years long experience as a graphic design consultant. He holds a PhD in Design and Technology for the Enhancement of Cultural Heritage.
    Board member of Aiap, actually he is the coordinator of activities and researches for the Graphic Design Documentation Centre (Aiap CDPG).
    His main research activities are in the fields of flexible visual identities, experience design and graphic design micro-histories.

    Cinzia Ferrara, architect and graphic designer, is assistant professor at Department of Architecture in the University of Palermo, where she is researcher in the field of visual communication. Actually is Delegate for the Visual Communication of the Department of Architecture. She is Past President of Aiap. Besides her design work, she writes on visual communication, teaches and holds lectures at international conferences and several Italian universities and design schools.
    She has written numerous essays and articles published in national and international magazines. She is the supervisor as well as organiser of conferences, exhibitions and workshops. She is also member of editorial committees, observatories and European projects. She lives and works in Sicily.
